How to appear in Google AI Overviews as a dental practice

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews. Start with crawlability, indexability and readable content. These are prerequisites, not a guarantee that an Overview will cite or link to you.

How do I appear in Google AI Overviews as a dental practice?

To be eligible for AI Overviews, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a Search snippet. Start by checking that Google can crawl it, that important content is textual, and that the page can be indexed. These are prerequisites, not a guarantee that an Overview will cite or link to you.

Google AI Overviews can show supporting links from pages in Google Search. Google documents that the same technical requirements and SEO fundamentals apply, with no separate technical requirement for AI Overviews. The data below describes crawl access and speed in Citevio's dental measurements; it does not measure AI Overviews appearances.

What should a dental practice check before aiming for AI Overviews?

Google's AI features guidance says eligibility starts with normal Search requirements: a page must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. It also recommends making important content available in text and checking that hosting or CDN infrastructure permits crawling.

What did our dental crawler-access and speed measurements show?

Citevio AI crawler access study, 22 July 2026, and Citevio dental practice web anatomy study, 6–26 June 2026.
MeasurementResult
Dental-domain crawler accessOf 3,929 Dentist domains, 12.5% blocked at least one of 13 AI and data crawlers; 8.3% blocked at least one crawler used by ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity.
First Contentful Paint256 of 527 dental practice websites produced a measurement. Of those 256, 130 (50.8%) were above 3.0 seconds.

These are descriptive measurements, not evidence that any one access or speed condition changes AI Overview visibility. Google has not published a speed threshold for AI Overviews, and Citevio has not measured whether speed changes AI visibility outcomes.

Citevio's dental market research is published openly under CC-BY-4.0 with a DOI, so the numbers can be checked and reused; client data is never published.

What about "dentist near me" searches specifically?

AI Overviews may appear for local-intent searches, but Google says they show only when its systems determine that they add value to classic Search. Citevio has not measured how often they appear for dental near-me queries, and map-pack visibility should not be treated as an AI Overview measurement.

What should I actually do?

First, use Google Search Console to confirm that Google can crawl and index the page. Then make the important information available in text, verify that robots.txt and hosting infrastructure permit crawling, and fix technical errors that prevent a normal Search snippet. These steps address eligibility; they are not a ranking trick or a promise of an AI Overview appearance.

We have not measured a time-to-appearance number for AI Overviews, so this page does not give a timeline.

What this page is not

This page describes technical accessibility: whether Google's crawlers can reach and read a dental practice's site. It is not a measurement of how often dental practices appear inside an AI Overview; Citevio has not run that measurement.

Which questions do dental practices commonly ask about AI Overviews?

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google uses the same Search controls for AI features. To limit what can be shown from a page, Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. These controls also affect ordinary Search, so they are not a separate AI-Overviews-only switch.

Do AI Overviews show up for "dentist near me" searches?

AI Overviews may appear for local-intent searches, but Google says they show only when its systems determine that they add value to classic Search. Citevio has not measured how often they appear for dental near-me queries.

Does site speed affect whether I appear in an AI Overview?

Google has not published a stated speed requirement for AI Overviews specifically. In Citevio's dental practice web anatomy study, 6–26 June 2026, 130 of the 256 measurable sites among 527 US dental practice websites in 7 US metros and 9 smaller nearby towns (50.8%) had First Contentful Paint above 3.0 seconds. We have not measured whether speed changes AI visibility outcomes.

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?

No. Gemini is a conversational assistant, while Google AI Overviews is a Search feature. They are different surfaces, and this page does not publish a Gemini measurement.
