How does ChatGPT decide which dentist to recommend?
ChatGPT retrieves candidate businesses through Bing's index, then favors practices with consistent information across platforms, a rating around 4.3 stars or higher, and recent reviews. It also pulls from business-data providers and community sources. Strong Bing presence plus consistent details and fresh reviews is the combination that gets a clinic named.
Unlike a Google search, ChatGPT doesn't return a page of links you scroll through. It synthesizes an answer and names a few businesses directly. That makes the stakes higher: being fourth is the same as being invisible. Understanding the pipeline — retrieval, then selection — is what lets you influence it.
Being eligible and being chosen are different things. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, across roughly 350,000 business locations, put ChatGPT's local visibility rate at about 1.2% nationally.

Does ChatGPT use Google? No — it uses Bing
ChatGPT search relies on Bing's index, not Google's. For a local question it gathers 20 to 30 of the top web results and writes its answer from those, according to Search Engine Land's 2025 breakdown of ChatGPT local search. Bing indexing is what makes a practice eligible to be named. It is not a promise of being named.
The practical consequence is that your Google rankings tell you almost nothing about your ChatGPT visibility. If your site has never been submitted to Bing, ChatGPT has no reliable way to retrieve it, no matter how strong your Google SEO is. Being in the index is the floor, not the ceiling. In our June 2026 Columbus scan, the 21 practices whose Bing data we could read were all indexed, from about 50 pages to more than 145,000, and ChatGPT named none of the 58 practices we checked.

The steps that get a clinic into ChatGPT
In order: allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, get indexed in Bing via Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow, add LocalBusiness and Dentist schema, keep your review rating above roughly 4.3 stars, keep reviews fresh, and make your name, address and phone identical across every platform. In our own scans most practices already clear the review bar. The structured-data step is where they fall down.
- Open robots.txt to AI. Confirm OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ClaudeBot are not blocked.
- Get into Bing. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, enable IndexNow, and submit key pages manually.
- Add structured data. Implement LocalBusiness, Dentist and FAQ schema so AI understands your practice.
- Clear the rating floor. Build genuine reviews until your average sits comfortably above ≈4.3★.
- Keep reviews fresh. A steady, recent flow signals an active, trusted practice.
- Make your details consistent. Identical name, address and phone everywhere — inconsistency lowers AI trust.
Step three is where most practices actually fail. We scanned 212 dental practices across two cities in June 2026 and checked each of these signals. Almost all of them had already done step one and cleared the rating floor in step four. Almost none had step three.
| What we checked, June 2026 | Charlotte (154 practices) | Columbus, OH (58 practices) |
|---|---|---|
| Named by ChatGPT | 2 of 154 (1.3%) | 0 of 58 |
| robots.txt open to AI crawlers | 147 of 154 (95.5%) | 54 of 58 (93.1%) |
| Complete structured data | 3 of 154 (1.9%) | 3 of 58 (5.2%) |
| Average rating of the practices ChatGPT skipped | 4.82★ | 4.74★ |
| Median review count of those practices | 264 | 205 |

How long until ChatGPT shows my practice?
Once your pages are indexed in Bing, they can begin appearing in ChatGPT within days to a few weeks. The technical foundation is quick; building the review and consistency signals that make ChatGPT confident enough to recommend you compounds over a 30 to 90 day window. No one can guarantee a specific position.
New domains and practices with thin review profiles sit toward the slower end of that range. The fastest wins usually come from clinics that already have good reviews and simply weren't indexed or structured correctly — for them, the fix can surface quickly.
Expect movement, not a fixed date. According to a 2025 Profound analysis of about 80,000 prompts per engine, roughly 40 to 60% of the domains an engine cites for a given question change within a single month. Visibility is something you re-check, not something you win once.

Frequently asked questions
How does ChatGPT decide which dentist to recommend?
ChatGPT's search feature retrieves results through Bing's index, then favors businesses with consistent information across platforms, a strong review rating (around 4.3 stars or higher), and recent reviews. It also draws on business-data providers and community sources. A practice that is well indexed in Bing with consistent details and good reviews is far more likely to be named.
Does ChatGPT use Google to find dentists?
No. ChatGPT search relies on Bing's index, not Google's, so a practice Bing has not indexed cannot be named at all. Search Engine Land's 2025 breakdown of ChatGPT local search describes it gathering 20 to 30 of the top web results and answering from those. Bing indexing is the entry condition, not a ranking promise, which is why a practice can sit on page one of Google and still never appear in ChatGPT.
How do I get my dental website into Bing so ChatGPT can find it?
Create a free Bing Webmaster Tools account, submit your XML sitemap, enable IndexNow for fast crawling, and manually submit your key pages. Make sure your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. New pages typically appear in Bing within days to a few weeks, after which they can begin surfacing in ChatGPT.
What rating do I need for ChatGPT to recommend my practice?
AI engines tend to favor practices above an approximate rating floor: around 4.3 stars for ChatGPT, with reported floors of roughly 4.1 for Perplexity and 4.5 or higher for Gemini. Below that range a practice is less likely to be recommended whatever its technical setup. Above it, extra stars add little. In our own June 2026 scans, practices averaging 4.8 stars still went unnamed. What separated them was not reviews: 151 of the 154 Charlotte practices we scanned were missing complete structured data.
