GEO does not replace dental SEO. It changes the scoreboard. SEO measures where your site sits in a list of links; GEO measures whether an assistant names your practice in its answer. Most of the technical base carries over untouched. What changed is the weighting: mentions of your practice elsewhere now track visibility far more closely than links do, and page length barely registers.
What changed in dental SEO in 2026, and what does GEO do differently?
Three things: what you are aiming at, which signals carry weight, and how you check whether it worked. GEO (getting your practice named inside an AI answer) shares the technical groundwork with SEO. Writing longer pages is the habit the data retires outright. Links and page-one rankings still count; they just no longer decide, because mentions elsewhere now count for more.
The plainest way to see the difference is to put the everyday work in one column and ask what the AI-answer data says about each item. Some rows are untouched. Two are downgraded. One is retired.

What still works exactly the way it did?
Everything that makes a site readable by a machine. A crawler that cannot reach a page has nothing to quote. A site missing from Bing's index is missing from ChatGPT's raw material. A Google Business Profile with the wrong hours feeds Gemini the wrong hours. None of that changed. What changed is that clearing those bars no longer gets you named on its own.
Our own scans show the gap between the two clearly. In our June 2026 scan of 58 Columbus dental practices, we could read Bing coverage for 21 of them. All 21 were in the index, ranging from about 50 indexed pages to about 145,000. ChatGPT named none of the 58 practices.
Those 21 come from the batch of the scan where the city label inside the query was malformed, so read that number as directional. Charlotte points the same way from a cleaner angle: 147 of 154 practices had their site fully open to AI crawlers, and ChatGPT named 2 of them.

Which signals changed weight?
Mentions of your practice on other websites now track AI visibility far more closely than links to your site do. Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs measured a correlation of 0.664 for branded web mentions against 0.218 for links. YouTube mentions came out highest of all, at about 0.737, in a second study of the same size.

A correlation of 1.0 would mean two things always move together, and 0 would mean no relationship at all, so the gap between 0.664 and 0.218 is wide. Both studies point at the same place: signals that live off your own website.
The practical difference is what a month of work looks like. An SEO plan turns "authority" into a campaign to acquire links. The correlation data points somewhere else: what these engines appear to reward is being described, consistently, in places you do not own. Same goal, different chore.
Why did "make it longer" stop working?
Because length never predicted citation in the first place. In December 2025 Ahrefs examined 174,048 pages drawn from 1,677,876 cited URLs across 560,346 AI Overviews and found a correlation of 0.04 between word count and being cited, which is effectively none. More than half of the cited pages, 53.4%, were under 1,000 words.
This is the clearest break with an SEO habit, because word-count targets were one of the easiest things to sell and to measure. Ahrefs' own summary is blunt: "There is a near-zero correlation between word length and being cited in AI Overview responses (0.04 Spearman correlation)."

What appears to matter instead is whether one question is answered completely in one place. A 600-word page that answers "how much does Invisalign cost in Charlotte" from start to finish can be lifted and quoted. A 3,000-word page that spreads the same answer across four sections often cannot, because the engine has to assemble it first. Length is a side effect of covering a question, not a target to hit.
How much does a Google ranking still carry into AI answers?
Less than it did a year ago, and the direction is the useful part. In July 2025 Ahrefs found 76.10% of AI Overview citations came from pages that ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Repeating the analysis in March 2026 across 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs, that share was 38%.
Ahrefs is explicit that the two datasets are not directly comparable, because its citation detection improved between the studies, so part of the drop is measurement rather than behavior. Treat it as directional. The direction is still worth acting on: a page that ranks well is more likely to be cited, and ranking well is no longer the entry ticket it once was. In the March 2026 data, the citations that did not come from the top 10 split almost evenly between pages ranking 11 to 100 and pages ranking beyond 100.

For a dental practice that cuts both ways. Your existing rankings still help. And a competitor who never outranked you can still be the name an assistant gives.
What replaces rank tracking as a scoreboard?
A named-or-not test, repeated. There is no position four in an AI answer: either the assistant names your practice for a patient question or it does not. The same question can produce a different answer on a different day, so a single check is a snapshot rather than a score.

Stability and baseline difficulty explain most of the frustration practice owners describe. SOCi's own read on its numbers: "AI visibility is three to 30 times harder to achieve than ranking well in traditional local search." The sources behind the answers also keep rotating, which is why a single test proves very little. What this means for a single-location practice
Keep the SEO work, and stop asking it to do a job it was never measured on. The site still has to be readable, indexed and accurate. What changes is where the next hour goes: into being described accurately in places you do not own, rather than into ranking a longer page.
Our June 2026 scans are the plainest evidence we have. Across 154 Charlotte and 58 Columbus dental practices, ChatGPT named two. The ones it skipped were not weak by classic standards: they averaged 4.82 stars in Charlotte, 138 of the 151 with rating data sat at 4.5 stars or better, and 147 of the 154 sites were open to AI crawlers.
