Often, yes: an existing SEO agency or web developer can handle important GEO-adjacent work. The key question is whether it also has a documented process for repeatedly measuring AI answers to a fixed set of patient questions and acting on those results.
Your current SEO agency may already own useful work: technical maintenance, local search, content, reporting and coordination with the website. The question is not whether that work has value. It is whether the agency has an explicit process for measuring how AI answers handle the practice's own buyer questions.
What can your current agency already do, and what can it not?
| Work | Existing SEO agency can do it? | What needs to be explicit for GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Technical and crawlability fixes | Usually yes | Test the relevant crawler path and preserve the result; Google documents the robots permission layer. |
| Content and local-business information | Usually yes | Connect changes to named patient questions instead of publishing generic AI copy. |
| Monthly reporting | Usually yes | Record the prompt, engine, date, answer and the definition of a named or cited result. |
| AI-answer measurement | Possibly | Agree a fixed question set and repeat it; a single screenshot is only a snapshot. |

What should you ask your current agency?
Ask whether it can show the exact questions, engines, dates and recording method it would use — and whether those questions stay fixed long enough to compare. A useful answer can be yes, no or “we can do the technical work but not the measurement.”
- Ask what is already covered. Crawlability, local SEO, content and reporting can remain valuable even if a separate AI-visibility layer is added.
- Ask what the report measures. A dashboard label is not enough; request the underlying questions and definitions.
- Ask who implements each finding. The practice, web developer and SEO agency can share the work if responsibility is written down.
- Ask whether they have requested the site with AI crawler user-agents and recorded the status codes, not just read the
robots.txtfile. - Ask whether the CDN, firewall or bot-management layer is configured separately from that file, and who administers it. On many sites that is a different supplier from the one writing the pages.
- Ask whether the page content is present in the raw HTML rather than assembled in the browser, and how they checked.
- Ask what they would report if the answer came back bad. A supplier who has never returned a negative finding has either a perfect estate or a reporting problem.
Do you need to replace your SEO agency?
No. A practice can keep its SEO agency and add a narrow measurement process where there is a real gap. Replacing an agency before identifying that gap is not a requirement of GEO and can disrupt work that is already useful.
Citevio measures visibility on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Its method is described in how we measure AI visibility. For the larger choice between SEO and GEO, see Dental SEO vs. GEO; for agency type, see dental vs. general marketing agencies.
What is the honest next step?
Start by asking the existing agency to describe its current work and its proposed measurement boundary. If it can own the recurring test and interpretation, there may be no reason to add another provider. If it cannot, keep the agency's valuable work and compare a specialist only for that distinct layer.
Use the free checker for a first reading of your website and then keep the questions and the result together before changing anything.

How we measured this
This is a decision guide, not a performance study. Tool prices were read from the vendors' published pages on 25 August 2026. The dental-site figures on this page are from Citevio's June 2026 dataset; they describe the scanned sites, not an outcome caused by any one change.
Common questions
Can my web developer help with GEO?
Yes. A developer can resolve access, rendering, markup and page-template issues. The practice still needs an owned way to decide which questions to measure and how to interpret repeated results.
What should I assess before replacing my SEO agency?
No. SEO work can remain valuable while a practice adds a separate AI-answer measurement process. Replacement is not implied by a measurement gap.
What should a GEO report contain?
It should identify the fixed questions, engines, dates, definitions and underlying results so a practice can distinguish a repeated observation from a single screenshot.
What should I ask my web developer to change for AI visibility?
Ask whether essential practice, service, and provider information is present in raw HTML; whether AI crawler access has been tested; and whether visible facts match the markup. Give the developer a specific finding and owner rather than asking for generic AI optimization. Those checks address readable site conditions, not a promise of an AI recommendation.
Which parts of my current agency's work can remain valuable when I add AI measurement?
Technical maintenance, crawlability fixes, local search, content, reporting, and website coordination can remain valuable when a practice adds AI measurement. The question is whether the agency also has an explicit process for fixed patient questions, repeated AI readings, and interpretation. A measurement gap does not erase useful existing work.
Why is a dashboard label not enough to define a GEO report?
A dashboard label does not show what was measured. Ask for the underlying questions, engines, dates, definitions of named or cited results, and the recorded answers. Those details let a practice distinguish a repeated observation from a single screenshot and see whether the report can support a decision rather than just display a label.
Who may administer the bot-management layer separately from the person writing site pages?
A CDN, firewall, host, security product, or bot-management supplier may administer crawler access separately from the person writing the site's pages. Ask who owns that layer before assigning a crawler-access finding. A page editor can change copy while another administrator controls the server response that an AI crawler actually receives.
Which technical GEO tasks can an existing SEO agency usually perform?
An existing SEO agency can usually handle technical and crawlability fixes, content and local-business information, and monthly reporting. For GEO, ask it to make the relevant crawler test, preserve the result, connect content work to named patient questions, and record the prompt, engine, date, answer, and result definition explicitly.
What must be explicit before technical SEO work counts as GEO measurement?
Technical work becomes GEO measurement only when the questions, engines, dates, recording method, and result definitions are explicit and repeated. A crawlability fix or a dashboard screenshot alone does not show how AI answers handle the practice's buyer questions. The measurement boundary must be clear before a practice can compare reports over time.
What prompt, engine, date, and result details should an agency record?
The agency should record the exact prompt, AI engine, date, answer, and the definition used for a named or cited result. Keep the underlying result with that record. Those fields make a report inspectable and allow later readings of the same question to be compared instead of relying on an isolated screenshot.
Should my agency test the actual AI-crawler path instead of only reading robots.txt?
Yes. Reading robots.txt checks the permission-file layer, but it does not prove the server will allow an AI crawler. Ask the agency to request the relevant crawler path with AI crawler user-agents and record the status response. This separates the declared rule from the live access result the crawler receives.
Why can a CDN, firewall, or bot manager create a separate GEO problem?
A CDN, firewall, or bot manager can make the live server response differ from what robots.txt declares. It may also be controlled by a separate supplier from the team publishing page content. That creates a separate access layer to test and assign, rather than assuming a page editor or SEO report controls the final crawler response.
How should an agency check that content is in raw HTML?
Ask the agency to inspect the page response and confirm that essential practice, service, and provider content is present before a browser assembles the page. A normal browser view can conceal JavaScript-dependent content. Record the method used and give any clear rendering fault to the person who controls the template or implementation layer.
What should my agency report when an AI-visibility finding is negative?
It should report the negative finding with the prompt, engine, date, underlying answer, and stated definition rather than hiding it behind a summary label. A negative result is still part of the measurement record. Without it, a practice cannot tell whether the report reflects the observed readings or only selected screenshots.
Can an SEO agency do the technical work but not own recurring AI measurement?
Yes. An SEO agency may be able to resolve access, rendering, schema, content, and local-business tasks while not owning the recurring AI measurement layer. Ask it to state that boundary clearly. Keeping the technical work and adding separate measurement can be appropriate when the existing agency does not run and interpret the repeated question set.
Can my practice, web developer, and SEO agency share GEO responsibilities?
Yes, if each responsibility is written down. The practice can own the patient questions and decisions, the web developer can implement page or access changes, and the SEO agency can handle defined technical, local, content, or reporting work. Shared work fails when a finding has no named owner or the measurement boundary is left implicit.
Should the AI question set stay fixed long enough to compare reports?
The question set is fixed and agreed with the client at the start, and logged. It does not change mid-month, because a set that changes cannot be compared month to month.
When can I add a narrow AI-measurement layer without replacing my SEO agency?
Add a narrow layer when the current agency's technical, local, content, and reporting work remains useful but recurring AI measurement is not explicit. First ask the agency to describe its measurement boundary. If the gap is real, keep valuable work in place and compare specialist help only for the distinct recurring measurement and interpretation task.
What measurement boundary should my current agency describe before I add another provider?
Ask the agency to state which questions, engines, dates, definitions, and repeated tests it owns, plus who interprets results and implements findings. That boundary shows whether it already covers recurring AI measurement or only technical work. A clear division avoids paying two providers for the same task or leaving the important measurement step unowned.
When is there no reason to add a GEO specialist?
There may be no reason to add a specialist when the current agency can document and own recurring tests of a fixed question set, interpret the results, and coordinate the appropriate work. Verify that method before deciding. The absence of a specialist is not a gap if the measurement and implementation responsibilities are already clear and covered.
